Why do we love happy endings?

I am one of those people who love romantic comedies. Happy endings are like the light that shines through all of the imagery that is created by bad stuff happening all around us. We watch these movies, read these stories and build fantasies and hope in everything beautiful. We cling to that hope even when we know that it is not how the real common stories go. It’s even better when it is true but the fictitious ones too never bother me because the image of love and harmony, romance and ultimate brilliance is such a solace in the world where so little hope is given in the news and by the cynics that paint everything as dark and doom.

I recently read another blogger’s article who thanked Shinda Ryhmes for giving them a good ending with their favorite love story, showing a glimpse of hope as the story alluded to the fact that these two people were going to reunite away from Seattle in Gray’s anatomy. People are desperate for good news. We want our childhood dreams of perfect love, prince charming, fairy boats, evening sunsets, children, a pikket fence surrounding a beautiful house, family weekends, career success…. We want to see what’s possible and the reaffirmation that our Innocent view of all things beautiful on a rolled up picture somewhere in our brains can be brought to life.

The best stories are those that show everything; love, passion, beautiful families, crappy ones, heartbreak, sickness, sadness and pain. This is closer to real life where things don’t always fall in place – not always. Some times bad things happen. The nice guy dies, the superhero fails, the prince charming isn’t dreamy, loved ones leave. In real life we dance but we cry too, we love intensely and immensely but sometimes someone matches our craze but sometimes our hearts break. We fall, we rise and we build ourselves up through it all; sometimes we fall again but sometimes we get on a success streak and work daily on our messy selves until we shall retire from this life.

I still remain a sucker for a good love story…. 🙂 Especially one with all the different themes that show the complexity of human beings coz that’s what we are – complex.
