One of the lessons I learnt early in life was to not have expectations of people. This also begs the knowledge and belief that I am not owed. The world doesn’t owe me.
In the recent past, I am confronted with the fact that aside from not being owed, I am dispensable. We all are. It does not matter how much of yourself you think you have given to your family, friends, and how much of your life you have given to your job. If you don’t find peace with the fact of your finality and dispensability, you will eternally seek the validation of people who don’t view you as any of what you think you are.
This is not at all supposed to enlist a hopeless feeling. On the contrary, it saves us a world of hurt. You have got to seek joy that comes from within – the joy of the Lord.
In my case, this rude awakening reminds me of the fundamental principle as applied to everything I do; not as unto men but for the glory of God.
That my work is a tiny part of the work of God in this world is not only a pleasure but a great privilege. We are workers in the vineyard of Christ, carriers of the gospel wherever we are and in whatever we do. If it glorifies the Lord, it will give you peaceful sleep at night and fulfilment for your entire lifespan.
I pray and hope for you that that fulfilment will suffice.
